Etisalat has partnered with Sharjah Islamic Bank to provide electronic hosting solutions for the bank’s secondary data center in Jebel Ali. The Data Center enjoys an advanced infrastructure and a high continuity, reliable and safe environment.

Etisalat signed an agreement during Gitex Technology Week- 2012. This will enable Sharjah Islamic Bank to guard its secondary data center from any possible disaster that can disrupt the bank’s day-to-day activities and prevent the bank from providing routine services to customers.

The signing ceremony was attended by Abdullah Ibrahim Al Ahmed, Senior Vice President for Business Solutions; Sharjah Islamic Bank was represented by Ahmed Saad, the bank’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer.

Commenting on the agreement, Abdullah Ibrahim Al Ahmed said, “We are excited about partnering with the Sharjah Islamic Bank. This agreement clearly demonstrates the Bank’s objective of protecting its data center to ensure uninterrupted and smooth business dealings with the public, mainly customers. At a time when telecommunications and ICT are witnessing fast-paced advancements, businesses are forced to stay ahead of these developments to maintain their high-tech service standards. In order to support several sectors, Etisalat constantly works on collaborating with companies in the UAE, whether public or private, to provide them with the required technical support and expertise.”

Ahmed Saad commented: “Etisalat has achieved a leading stature in the ICT sector making it one of the most important ICT solutions providers in the UAE and region. This stature has urged Sharjah Islamic Bank to sign this agreement, whereby Etisalat will host the Bank’s secondary Data Center, through which we aim to protect the Bank’s data from any major disruption that can lead to the disruption of the Bank’s usual services and business processes.”
Etisalat’s Data Center in Jebel Ali enjoys many features with a 40,000 square meters complex, and an 8,083 sq meter data center building. The data center also contains four bay units and each bay unit contains 360 racks.

National Kidney Registry Goes ‘Cloud’- Breakthrough Event Will Save More Lives

According to latest industry reports, The National Kidney Registry’s new SMELAC matching system has been successfully migrated to Microsoft’s Windows Azure cloud computing platform. It now boasts of a speedy paired exchange match processing. The announcement was made at the American Transplant Congress in Boston last night at the 4th Annual National Kidney Registry Awards Event by Garet Hil, CEO of the National Kidney Registry, and Wes Anderson, Microsoft’s Vice President of Public Sector Services.

Windows Azure cloud computing platform has significantly increased the National Kidney Registry’s matching capacity by 400% allowing multiple match runs to execute simultaneously. This event has allowed the registry to facilitate a larger amount of pair exchange transplants.

Mr. Wes Anderson, Vice President for U.S. Public Sector Services at Microsoft, said, “The National Kidney Registry team realized early-on that scaling their success in kidney matching requires variable computing capability that may grow exponentially at very short notice, presenting important conditions for moving back-end processes to a cloud-based solution. By fully leveraging Windows Azure, the National Kidney Registry is continuing its amazing work of helping to provide a long and normal life for the ultimate benefactors of this endeavor — those among us who need the help of the community to overcome end-stage renal disease.”

Mr. Hil added, “Microsoft continues to provide valuable technical support as we continue to grow our program. The migration to Azure is the latest advance that is allowing our computing capacity to scale up as our pool of incompatible pairs expands.”

Expanding on the importance of this latest technology advance, Dr. Marc Melcher, transplant surgeon at Stanford University and Research Director for National Kidney Registry, said, “More and more transplant centers are using kidney paired exchange transplantation to help their patients in kidney failure, and the computational power required to support the sophisticated matching algorithms that sift through and evaluate all the potential matches has been growing exponentially.”

Intermedia Becomes a Member of CSA to Enhance their Cloud Security Services


Intermedia, Microsoft specialist and hosted service provider recently announced that it has joined the cloud security alliance (CSA) as a corporate member. Intermedia responded by stating that this allegiance will help ease all customer concerns regarding the security of its cloud computing services.


The CSA is nonprofit organization which aims to promote the use of best practices to provide security within cloud computing. It also strives to create awareness regarding the safe usage of cloud computing


The alliance is led by a broad coalition of industry practitioners, corporations, associations and other key stakeholders.


“As our customers move to the cloud and as end users access corporate and private data from a range of mobile and desktop devices, ensuring data privacy and security is of paramount importance,” said Michael Gold, president of Intermedia. “Intermedia has been providing secure, business-grade cloud-based services for over a decade. Cage / Suite / Hotel / Warehouse colocation

“Fractional” colocation customers usually pay for “infrastructure” – space within rack cabinets, power and network bandwidth from a single provider. When a customer has populated four full racks, or is using substantial amounts of power or bandwidth resources, “suite” colocation becomes an attractive option. Cage colocation is suitable for very large installations, where the costs of purchasing and maintaining infrastructure such as backup power and air conditioning from a single source begins to become prohibitive. At this stage, “suite” colocation becomes a viable option. Suite colocation is generally sold by the square foot by property management companies, rather than hosting providers. Rather than obtaining power and network resources from a single source (the hosting company), the customer may opt to install their own resources. Bandwidth is generally available from many different providers within a facility, providing great flexibility to the customer. This type of colocation is particularly well suited to peering situations, where information is flowing to and from a large number of carriers. For example, a VOIP service provider would benefit from being able to negotiate multiple connectivity contracts which are used simultaneously – a cheap “short-hop” network like Cogent to service major North American cities, in combination with a higher-cost “long-haul” provider such as Global Crossing, Bell or Worldcom to provide overseas connectivity.

The next logical stage of infrastructure development, after dedicated servers, is colocation. With this model, a customer is leased rack space, power and network bandwidth by the hosting provider. The provider also manages site security, air conditioning and other requirements of the data center. All servers and peripheral devices such as switches, routers, firewalls and load balancers are owned and managed by the customer.

Entry Level Colocation or Fractional Colocation

Entry-level colocation, (often called “fractional colocation” when it is sold in units of less than a full rack cabinet) is available in various capacities based on the rack space requirements, such as a single-U solution (for a single server), “octal rack” (11 U, suitable for several servers plus peripheral devices), “half rack” (22 U) or “full rack” (44 U).

What All Does a Colocation Plan Include?

Colocation generally includes a basic amount of power service included in the basic price, for example “5 amps included with half rack plans”. Because the profit margins on power delivery tend to be high, customers need to carefully consider their power requirements when deploying colocated servers. If a single 1-U server burns 300 watts under maximum load, 5 amps of power is only sufficient for two such servers – leaving 20 units of space unusable.

Network Bandwidth of Colocated Hosting Plan

Network bandwidth is also sold as a commodity item under colocated hosting plans. Bandwidth may be metered or “burstable” (a large amount of capacity is made available to you, and you pay for the actual amount of data transferred, allowing you to accommodate occasional “bursts” of utilization) or unmetered (you are guaranteed an amount of network capacity, and may utilize this full capacity at no extra cost).

Almost every business customer with a colocated hosting service will realize the best value from unmetered bandwidth. Although the unit costs of raw resources are much lower with colocated hosting, in most cases the customer is still “stuck” with a single provider of space, power, bandwidth and services.

The Cloud VPS Plus

In a nutshell, a cloud node is a VPS plus. You’re running not only a custom set of applications such as a Joomla CMS or an OSCommerce shopping cart, but an entire operating system of your choice. It still runs on a physical server shared by other users, but your server is rather well isolated from problems caused by others. You can decide to run Microsoft Windows instead of Linux if you so desire. You can generally add resources like storage space, memory and CPU power on demand. In some cases, you can easily move a cloud node from one physical server to another – for example to move your virtual from a third-party provider to an in-house physical server.

Elastic Computing Options

Typically, cloud hosting services offer “elastic computing” options; you can add resources (storage, processor power and memory) on the fly – and you’ll only pay for what you use. Hosting companies like cloud products because they require less maintenance than dedicated servers, because it allows them to manage costs more efficiently, and because the potential profit margins are higher than with shared or dedicated servers.

Initial Low Cost & Resources Availability

Customers select cloud services because of the low initial cost, availability of resources on demand, and “self-serve” management. As the hosting company manages all hardware, power, network and security infrastructures, the customer does not require in-house expertise in these areas.

Cloud Hosting is Less Efficient than Conventional VPS

However, despite all the marketing hype surrounding this currently fashionable hosting option, cloud-based hosting is inherently less efficient than conventional VPS service. Because the physical server must run multiple distinct operating systems, more physical resources are necessary to handle the same number of customers. This increases the costs to the hosting provider, and to you. There’s still a risk that hackers who break into the physical cloud server can access your sensitive data.

Standard Web Application Configuration

And the cloud is expensive. As an example, a “standard web application configuration”, containing 6 cloud nodes (2 databases, 2 application servers, and 2 web servers, generally considered a typical “three-tiered” architecture) with 300 GB of storage and 120 GB of monthly data transfer, will cost $2,794.76 per month. That is $33,537.12 per year! Many internet businesses find that the cloud model makes sense during initial development, but when a service goes live and begins to consume resources, costs can rapidly balloon out of control.

Of course, cloud-based services need special design characteristics to be cost-efficient – a cloud-based system is best frequently implemented in a single-node design which incorporates all functional tiers into a single node.

The high potential costs of raw resources (network bandwidth, data storage or processing power) guarantees that most successful online companies eventually outgrow the cloud and need to consider operating their own infrastructure.
