Massive Second Cloud Data Center from Alibaba

Alibaba’s push into the U.S. cloud services market, putting the company in direct competition with the likes of Amazon, Microsoft, and Google in their biggest market, started earlier this year with the announcement of the first Alibaba data center in Silicon Valley.

Aliyun – the Chinese e-commerce titan’s cloud business – said it is to open its second USA data center is a bid to address the “increasing demand for affordable and secure, mission-critical cloud computing”.

As a part of the company’s $1 billion global investment in the cloud-computing business to compete with the likes of Amazon.com, Inc.

Alibaba Group offers more than 10 cloud services to assist customers for accelerating innovation, including start-ups looking to reduce the cost of cloud-based service delivery and big data analytics, as well as established businesses in the gaming, multimedia and mobile Internet industries. The Alphabet subsidiary has a massive global data center fleet to deliver its online services, but far from all of them host its cloud infrastructure services.

The new data centre is Alibaba’s ninth globally and the fourth that it has opened this year, following the launch of its previous USA facility in March, as well as data centres in Singapore and China.

Ethan Sicheng Yu, veep of the internationally-branded AliCloud, said: “Our second U.S. data center is situated in Silicon Valley, which is the epicenter for technology innovation world-wide”.

AliCloud also maintains data centers in Beijing, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Shanghai in China, and plans more facilities in other worldwide locations in the Middle East, Asia and Europe in the future.

In June, it announced partnerships with chipzilla Intel, data center outfit Equinix, and French website hosting and cloud services provider Linkbynet.
