Default EPA Tier for diesel generators

I don't know where I've been, but just noticed that this was out there.

I'm working on a new generator install and I've been seeing a lot of talk about Tier 1 and Tier 2 generators.

I've tried looking around online for a good breakdown of the Tiers and what they mean and there limitations.

Does anyone have a good breakdown or knowledge of the Tiers?

I'm looking to understand when each Tier went into effect and when generators that are part of that Tier can and can't be installed. I heard some contractor say that by 2011 you won't be able to install Tier2 generators that they would all have to Tier3 from then on??

Any help or pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Dave, as far as I know, Tier directives are not intended for generators only, but for the whole datacenter. In short, generators are a part of Tier directives. Look at

The EPA has, since 2003?, a program in place for all diesel engines. This is separate from the Uptime Institutes Tiers.

I was told by a Ziegler/CAT dealer that I can still buy and install a Tier I diesel generator, however after 2008(?) Tier I diesels wouldn't be installable again.
Tier II he said can only be installed till 2011.

I was hoping someone had a better understanding of this setup than I did so I could make some more informed decisions. Our finance people don't want to touch a diesel that will have no real re-sale value later on. And how would this Tier system effect the depreciation of the generator?
