Unix Serve
If you are testing a Linux/BSD/UNIX server, you can ssh into the box and issue the following command: - telnet relay-test.mail-abuse.org

Windows Server
If you are on a Windows server, you will have to register at Abuse.net: Home Page in order to run these tests/

if you do find it's an open relay, you're probably on a load of email blacklists. I advise putting in your IP at MXToolbox and contacting the list owners of any that you are on.

I find it easier to just use a web-based tool like http://www.abuse.net/relay.html or http://www.spamhelp.org/shopenrelay/.

http://multirbl.valli.org/lookup/ is another good tool to check if you're on any blacklists, but you shouldn't request removal until after you've stopped relaying untrusted servers and fixed any other problems that got you on the blacklist.
