Default HA server network uplink?!?

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about a platform independent concept to give servers with 2 NICs a redundant network connection to 2 separate switches (against single point of failure). Therefore I am looking for something that works with Windows (2k, xp, 2k3 server), Linux, HPUX and AIX. Since I have more network than server background, the first things I came up with were Rapid Spanning Tree or OSPF. Some of my colleagues are already using port aggregation (channeling in Ciscoese), but that limits them to link both NICs to the same switch. Some OSs also support 'backup interfaces', checking in any way if the primary link is up, if not, activating the backup one. But that's platform dependent AFAIK, and missing the loadsharing advantage.
If anyone has an idea about the state of the art redundancy mechanism, feel free to share your experience Is there maybe already something ready for use in the server corner?

I've been discussing that in the "router" section of this site:
