Default facility monitoring hardware...and setup

aloha!

i am looking into setting up server/storage for monitoring our facility equipment such as HVAC's, UPS's, branch circuit monitoring, etc., etc.

this is not our primary monitoring, im just looking to better understand whats behind our monitoring systems and get my feet wet in the networking world.

is there anyone out there familiar with modbus, SNMP, and hardware config that can help point me in the right direction...

this is just a test setup, i have no real it experience and im picking from a stack of old equipment..thats due to be recycled.

is there an idiot book for this?

not that i don't trust the immense knowledge base wikipedia has to offer...but i find value in conversing with people who have actual experience. if i wanted to just wing it...i can break stuff and learn from that experience like the best of 'em...

anybody feeling helpful?
