Industry and government leaders gather in San Francisco to discuss environmental issues surrounding data center operations
DatacenterDynamics, the leading global information source for data center professionals of all levels, will host its 7th annual San Francisco conference on July 17th 2009. at the San Francisco Hilton Hotel.
The conference will hear Industry and Government leaders explore what existing and looming environmental legislation will mean for the data center sector at a time of incessantly growing demand, tight energy supply and frozen capital markets.
Facebook’s Director of Site Operations Tom Furlong, Digital Realty Trust SVP of Technical Services Michael Manos and Jon Haas, Eco-Technologies Initiative Manager at Intel and Director of The Green Grid will discuss how the industry’s changing realities are impacting the way mission-critical facilities have to be designed.
They will join a panel which will discuss how containers, modularity, high-density zones and mixed-use infrastructure are changing the way data centers are built.
In a key presentation, Chairman of the British Computer Society’s Data Center Spe############t Group Zahl Limbuwala will outline strategies to minimize a data center’s exposure to carbon tax by increasing energy efficiency. The UK cap-and-trade scheme, part of the country’s unilateral Carbon Reduction Commitment, will start in April 2010 and US Federal legislation similar legislation is making its way through the U.S. Congress under the alias of Waxman-Markey bill.
The House recently passed the bill – which enjoys support of President Barack Obama – and there are strong indications that the Senate will do the same.
Limbuwala will explain how those in the data center space can best anticipate the new regulations and mitigate their impact on business.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Andrew Fanara will update delegates on the development of EPA’s Energy Star program for servers and what the program’s launch in the near future will mean for data center and IT industry. The agency has been working closely with industry leaders to develop Energy Star qualifying criteria for servers and Fanara – the program’s manager – will deliver the final server specification report at the conference.
The industry’s changing realities have also changed the way mission-critical facilities have to be designed. A panel of presenters will discuss how containers, modularity, high-density zones and mixed-use infrastructure are changing the way data centers are built.
The panelists will include Facebook’s Director of Site Operations Tom Furlong, Digital Realty Trust SVP of Technical Services Michael Manos and Jon Haas, Eco-Technologies Initiative Manager at Intel and Director of The Green Grid.
Other panels and presentations will feature representatives from NASA Ames Research Center, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Digital Realty Trust and SUN Microsystems.
Many of the speakers will be available for media interviews during the event. As the amount of passes is limited, DatacenterDynamics is only open to end-users who design, construct or own/operate mission critical facilities.
The conference will take place on July 17, 2009, at the San Francisco Hilton at 333 O’Farrell St.
