Default Bell Canada Deploys Nortel Networks Optical Technology, Extending Affordable Optical

I got this infomation from http://www.bce.ca. It might be useful fo anyone.

CIBC Consolidates Server Infrastructure with New Solution to Simplify its
Network and Reduce Cost

OTTAWA, June 16 --
Bell Canada has deployed Optical Networks
metro dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology from Nortel
Networks(*) (NYSE/TSX: NT) to cost-effectively offer enterprises of all sizes
optical broadband services such as Optical Storage Connectivity over shared
infrastructure. Bell Canada is offering these services to its customers as
part of its high speed metro (HSM) service.
The HSM service utilizing Nortel Networks Optical Metro 5200 Multiservice
Platform will allow Bell Canada to offer its enterprise customers high-
performance optical connectivity to enable business continuity and disaster
recovery capabilities. HSM offers a broad range of service interfaces
including Fibre Channel, ESCON, FICON and Gigabit Ethernet, as well as a range
of voice, video and mainframe protocols. HSM breaks the price barrier of
previous wavelength services by offering individual wavelengths to different
customers and carrying them over a common infrastructure. This innovative
deployment model broadens the market for the HSM service and makes high
performance connectivity affordable for a much broader range of enterprises.
"Without changing a company's infrastructure, Bell's High Speed Metro
Service using Nortel Networks DWDM technology is scalable and delivers the
simple, yet secure connectivity and speed that is critical to the success of
any businesses in a competitive environment," said Kelly McDougald, Senior
Vice President, Bell Canada Sales. "Our service provides value added solutions
for enterprises by enabling a company to focus internal resources and core
functions."
CIBC, a Canadian-based, large financial services company, has selected
Bell Canada's HSM services to facilitate a massive consolidation of its
storage server resources at its Toronto area data centers. The initiative is
aimed at simplifying the customer experience while significantly reducing its
network expenses and complexity. Using this technology, CIBC can reduce the
number of its storage servers it is currently using by almost 50%, resulting
in reduced operating expenses and a simplified server network.
"As a leading financial institution, we place a high premium on
technology that is flexible, secure and able to deliver the reliability and
redundancy necessary to support sensitive mission-critical applications," said
Dennis Cote, Vice President, Telecommunication Services, CIBC. "Nortel
Networks Optical Storage Connectivity Solutions delivered via Bell Canada's
HSM service has given us the reliability we need, while enabling a smooth
transition with no disruption to our day-to-day business operations."
Across its sites throughout Toronto, the new network will enhance the
storage networking capabilities of CIBC by linking servers over an optical
connection using fiber channel. The network will support data replication and
inter-data center connectivity between geographically separated sites thereby
enhancing business continuity and facilitating rapid recovery from
unanticipated events.
"This builds on our strategic relationship with Bell Canada and enables
it to offer a compelling high bandwidth service to enterprises looking to
implement business continuity solutions," said Philippe Morin, general
manager, Optical Networks, Nortel Networks. "As enterprises seek the
operational efficiencies and financial benefits that can be realized with
server consolidation, many have recognized the value that optical networks are
able to bring to this critical application."
Nortel Networks Optical Metro 5200 is a higher scale, survivable platform
for metropolitan access and interoffice applications. Strong connection
management and ring-to-ring interconnection enable seamless interworking
between wavelengths originating on Optical Metro 5100s located on customer
premises and core Optical Metro 5200s. Bell Canada's HSM service is available
today in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
Nortel Networks is focused on extending the benefits of networked storage
and breaking through the barriers that limit widespread deployment of storage
solutions - distance, interoperability, scalability, capacity and protocol
transparency. Nortel Networks is an industry leader in the transport of SAN
traffic across the metro, carrying more than 200 petabytes of mission-critical
traffic per day. A report from IDC estimated that Nortel Networks had more
than 45 percent of the metro DWDM optical storage connectivity market for
2002.
