Default Uses for a Philly data center?

Hi everyone. I work for a managed network security firm. Our company uses a tiny amount of space in our data center, and is looking for a single client to take up the rest. Our company doesn't want to get into the one cab at a time Colo business. There's space for roughly 80 cabs (1700 sqft raised floor), has 4x20 ton Lieberts for cooling, UPS, and diesel backup on-site. Building and biometric access for security. We're in Center City Philadelphia. Does anyone think this kind of facility is useful for a single client, or do you think we should be looking in another direction? Maybe cages? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

rickmav,

It might be hard to find just one client to fill up 80 cabs. Some of our largest customers are about half that size. You might get turned down from a client that big since your company is not well known in the datacenter business. Large datacenters in the area would probably be able to bring more to the table and might offer a deployment that size some incentives to sign a long contract with them.

Although you probably don't want to hear this, you might only be able to initially bring in clients that are 1 cabinet colo or below.

If you do attract larger customers that want several cabinets, you could offer cages that hold 3 or 4 cabinets and just build out as demand grows. Cabinets are usually one tile by 1 and a half tiles, so you can set up 8x8 and 10x8 cages to hold 3 and 4 cabinets respectively. Take down the middle wall and then you can hold 7 cabinets.

Whatever you decide to do, I suggest getting out a piece of graph paper and plan out where you want to put the cabinets and cages.

In the field of managed network security that you're in, perhaps you can bring in some of your current customer base and offer them more piece of mind that their data in not only secure on the internet but physically secure in your facility.

Where is it in the city? Send me an email matt@razorservers.com, we might take a look at it.

Send me an e-mail as well, we could potentially use the space though I can't make promises.

I appreciate all the suggestions. It is true that name recognition has been a big factor in this Philly market. Most of the business seems to go to Sungard or Level 3 in this area. It had been fun getting to know many of the players in this market, though. It is a difficult but interesting business. I'm going to keep plugging away and focus more strongly on cages.
