Why an 80% cushion?
Hello all
New to this forum and kind of new to data centers. My question is why do we not go above 80% of a power strips rating and would it be okay to ocassionaly go over that 80% limit without surpassing the total breaker rating. Thanks in advance for your time. Nick |
That 80% is mandated in the USA by the National Electrical Code. For continuous use (3 hours or more, i.e. servers that are always on inside a data center), circuit breakers are rated at 80% of their nominal capacity. It's okay to go above 80% use, but it's not okay to stay there.

So do you think it is only for US datacenters?
