Default Rackmount vs Desktop

Hi,

I was just wondering what the advantages were of using rackmount servers over the 'normal' desktop type form.

My company is wanting to install it's first server for the office (around 8 users) and I was planning on using Ubuntu Server Edition as Debian is the Unix OS I'm familiar with.

Any newbie advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello,

Rack mounts are normally chosen for operation in a DC for the density that they will allow for and that when rack mounted and connected to industrial cooling can yield more efficient performance.

Just curious, what will you be using this new server for, so often times it is so much less expensive to go with a remote dedicated server, especially if you want the server available 24/7 and don't have an office that is normally maned around the clock.

Anyway if I can help with anything on your hardware questions I will be happy to.

For the most part, the noise level of a rackmount will drive any office batty. One trick to remember is in most cases going to thicker(from 1U to 2U to 3U etc) should get quieter if the specification aren't increasing as well. Also a 4U is basically a tower anyway.

My recommendation would be if your looking for it to run offsite and your users are remoting into it, definately go rackmount, but if your maintaining it yourself at your location and you've never worked with a rackmount before stick to the tower-style systems.

Don't mean for this to be any sort of advertisement, but more of an example. We have really only one design in a 1U size that gets anywhere near the silence of a modern day box, it's a tad louder but when in the same room it doesn't interefere with phone calls for either end. The reason it's able to be so quiet is the design of the motherboard is optimized for the airflow from a single blower, and with the motherboard controlling it's speeds it will only push the fan harder when it needs it. With most dual cores that doesn't appear to be very often.

Its depends how much space you have. To place tower servers in rack its not a best solution. If you have a lot of space, you can make frames for tower servers and then all is ok
