I am curious to see what your current high uptimes consist of. Paste a copy from your linux box's uptime command or from your windows command systeminfo (from a dos prompt).

Here is my highest on a solaris server:

-bash-3.00$ uptime
11:28am up 705 day(s), 19:44, 1 user, load average: 0.08, 0.09, 0.09

It's not that I *need* it. Some people like to brag about their uptimes. I wanted to be that guy and see if anybody can beat that.

That's no fair then. My servers are always being power cycled or powered down because of some kind of maintenance. Here's the uptime for one of my database test boxes.

14:17:04 up 18 days, 22:51, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

Gotta love that load average.

It's been up 18 days since the last maintenance. But prior to that it was up about 2 years I think.

I agree with Neoeclectic. I do have Linux servers and I do reboot every two weeks or so. For an example, if they defunc process, they may need to reboot the box to kill. It all depends on what you are running on the servers as well.

Well something that I noticed here is that the ones that have the highest uptime days are also the ones with only one user. This makes a very big difference then those only up 4 days with 31 users. i think that when maintaining your server there are variables that need to be taken into consideration.

My servers automatically reboot every night at 3 am. While there are plenty of things you can do to keep from doing this, I find that it helps the stability and speed of a server to reboot ever 24 hours. And it takes so very little time for a reboot to process its no problem at all.

I think rebooting the server frequently is bad for users because so many things are going on the server and you never know everysecond users login and logout.May be they need information from your server and your server is in between the rebooting process.
It will give -ive imperssion to user.
We have to set up a time table for rebooting process and we will have to display this thing to our user.So that they will aware of.

Thats true. Specially, when you update kernel you need to reboot the box.
