ASHRAE in its recent update mandated the use of economizers in the data centers. is the move justified? what about the locations where the external factors are always unsuitable?
Economizers can save data center operators substantial operating costs. it is evident that economizers has potential to reduce the annual cost of a data center's energy consumption by 50% or more. Use of cooler external environmental temperatures to preserve hardware is an important component in sustainable green computing practices in general. Unfortunately, economizers are only useful for data centers located in cooler climates. In case climates or other parameters are not suitable then refrain to use economizers use additional tools to mitigate un-favorable conditions.
are there other ways to save on cooling in the not-so-suitable climates? yes, airflow management, hot aisle-cold aisle is an option, but do you know of anything else taht would be of any help?
