Default Mobile Broadband?

What are the broadband options available today? I know Att or cingular has had it available for a couple of years. But, you have to pay $50 or $60 a month for the service. Surely, by now there is a more affordable option. I do appreciate that there are places in town where I can pick up free wi-fi, but since I do work on the internet I would appreciate the same service I get with my cell-phone.

What kind of phone do you have and on what service? I am on Verizon with a Blackberry 8830. I thought about getting mobile broadband but since I use it so infrequently I decided to just tether my phone instead. This provides me internet access at a decent speed with no additional charge.
