Default UPS question

We are running around 30 servers on 42U rack. If I want to run UPS for least one to 2 hours, what are the factors I need to consider such as brand name, power out put, etc.

Thanks

Tom,
I would say you should select the UPS based on the following:

- Capacity - Based on electrical demand of equipment you want to power, now and in the future
- Batteries - Based on how long you want equipment to run without utility power -- more batteries, longer runtime
- Topology - Online or offline, depending on your need for reliability and continuous power conditioning
- Configuration - Based on the number and types of outlets and voltage your equipment needs
- Communications - Based on need to shutdown host equipment automatically in case of power outage and/or monitor UPS status via network
- Form factor - Based on need for rackmount ability
- Cost - Your budget (check shipping costs)
- Manufacturer - Popular US brands are APC, MGE, Emerson/Liebert and Powerware

Keep in mind that without cooling, most equipment will overheat sooner or later, so let that guide your runtime goal. Here is a pretty good layman's guide to UPSes: Information about power UPS , Uninterruptible Power Supplies and Power Protection

Hope that helps.

Ken

In addition the above mentioned, I would reccomend not to forget your TCO. Check the effeciency on the UPS, the installation costs and also the following service costs.
In order to get the most out of your batteries, the room temperature should be static around 20 Celcius (depending on the manufactor), so perhaps if possible, it would be a good idea to have the UPS in a seperate room than where your HW is.
Some UPS brands such as MGE allows the opertunity to upgrade the UPS by exchanging the power module and the isolation transformer. This means, that in case you infrastructure grows, you don't necesarrily need to purchase a new UPS, but you can just upgrade the existing one.
BTW - don't forget to consider redundancy.
