James, look at the diagram again. You'll notice that Gens feed the UPS's; if it wasn't fed this way, you would be screwed as you'd have to power everything down when you switched to generator - not clever!

I just had another look and you are obviously correct. I am not very technical so sorry for the mishap. The way you explain it me does make a lot more sense.
