We are trying to recycle some of these IBM xSeries 236 and added a pair of 500gb sata hard drives. But when we attach the drive, the system freezes. We cant see the server raid screen. What could be the solution?

First you can update your bios. Maybe the sata drive you are trying to attach is not suitable with the current bios version you have. Try update the firmware to IBM 1.8. This might help as well. It could be a problem of adaptec cards as well. test with different adaptec cards and you may able to run the drives.
