I am also new to clustering, i know only a little about veritas cluster server like it increases server utilisation through larger clusters and capacity based failover logic.

VCS stands for Veritas Cluster Server is a High-availability cluster software, for Unix, Linux and Microsoft.
VCS eliminates both planned and unplanned downtime, facilitates server consolidation, and effectively manages a wide range of applications in heterogeneous environments.

Veritas Cluster Server (also known as VCS and also sold bundled in the SFHA product) is a High-availability cluster software, for Unix, Linux and Microsoft Windows computer systems, created by Veritas Software (now part of Symantec). It provides application cluster capabilities to systems running databases, file sharing on a network, electronic commerce websites or other applications.

VCS is a high availability cluster solution developed by veritas. It will get rid of downtime by switching to other servers in case of a failure in a server.

It uses the heartbeat technology.

The Veritas Cluster Server is commonly used in datacenters. With the VCS installed in the case of a fault, the VCS takes action accordingly and the applications recover automatically. When your website happens to go down the VCS helps you restart those applications at another datacenter. In case of even the worst disaster your website remains up and running.

Have a look at the link: http://eval.veritas.com/downloads/van/vcs_quickref.pdf

VCS uses two components, LLT and GAB to share data over the private networks among systems.
These components provide the performance and reliability required by VCS.

Most Veritas Cluster Server implementations attempt to build availability into a cluster. Also VCS monitors and controls the applications in a cluster, and can restart or move them in response to a variety of hardware and software faults.
