Default Standard racks in DC?

Greetings,

I'm in some sort of predicament and was wondering if anyone here can advice.

Recently I took job to manage 2 datacenters for my company. The 2 DC combined has a capacity for 500 racks (or cabinets some call it). The 2 DC are meant to host corporate IT systems both internal/external facing.

The current practise is whenever there is a new project initiative, the project team will procure IT hardware, along with a new rack. In short I end up with racks of all shapes and dimensions within my 2 DC.

I would like to stop this practise by making racks and power whips part of the hosting provisioning i.e. I buy the racks.

Qns: I am sure some of you have encountered this before and my question is how do we convince the management that deploying standard racks is the way to go apart from being aesthetic pleasing?

PS: My department is non-revenue generating

A side qns, is 1100mm deep racks good enough or should I go with 1200mm?

Rgds
