Default Demonstration of speed – speed impact

Irrelevant of the costs involved, if a specific service is not up to the challenge of providing enough bandwidth to needs, then it is ineffective and also inappropriate. A test was devised in order to show the performance of the previous selected four connection types, at performing four tasks:

Test 1 – Opening the “BBC News” main page

Test 2 – Opening the “NASA.gov” main page

Test 3 – Opening the “Amazon UK” main page

Test 4 – Opening an article on the Aztec civilisation, on the MSN Encarta site

These are fair tests, especially in the situation of education, where it is more than likely that students would review sites, or similar topical sites – this provides an ideal sample.

Furthermore, in order to preserve fairness, and to create a test which is not dependant on Internet variables, such as load, site demand, etc, theoretical figures have been produced. This is:

[ size of page download in kilobytes ] / [ link speed in kb/s ] = [ seconds to download ]

In all eventualities, you will be unlikely to be able to reproduce these figures in a real world situation. You should consider these figures to mean the time taken to transfer the relevant data, in terms of actual time spent downloading, rather than time spent waiting for the server’s response, processing any overheads, etc.

A possible route that the enhancement of ADSL services could take, is the possibility for extended student-centred learning, in many respects. Although professional certification will never replace traditional taught courses, such as A-Levels, AVCEs, National Diplomas, HNC/HND’s or degrees, they are valuable, especially in industry where experience still carries a lot of weight.

In a collaboration of professional certification and e-learning, learners may enhance the appeal of their traditional qualifications, or further their practical understanding of the theories and methodologies they have gained at school, college or university, by using this to their advantage.

Outside the realms of professional certification and training, students should effectively be able to re-enforce or extend their current skill set, by using high-speed data links, for research purposes. It is a common misconception that the Internet is expensive for research – there are entire libraries of information available on the Internet, normally conveniently indexed and rapidly searchable – providing you have a fast enough link, of course.
