NAS & SAN fill different roles. SAN is used to consolidate huge amounts of storage
within many servers and NAS appliances to offload basic file service
responsibilities from existing servers without the big
cost.

The primary distinction between NAS and SAN solutions is that the form of access protocol. NAS protocols like NFS and CiFS offer shared file level access to storage resources. The management of the classification system resides with the NAS device.
