Default Power backup systems?

Our data center is located in the outskirts of a very large city and although power doesn't go out very often, when it does, you have to have some type of back up.

When the power went out in New York, Vermont, Ontario and Ohio some years ago, we really got to put our backup power to the test. One thing we didn't think about was having gas onsite to run the back-up power. At one point we had to drive out of the affected area to fill up our gas containers, as all the local places were down because of the power outage.

Has anyone else experienced major power disruption in their data center?
