Default de-duplication backup system

Using it, one can reduce storage needs by setting up a system that recognizes and overlooks redundant data when recording backups on disk or tape. Replicas are replaced with pointers to an original piece of data. This is especially useful for email files, where multiple users might have the same data stored on their systems.

How many of you use this to enhance performance of your DC?

It s a shared offereing at Expedient. We utilize the EMC Avamar software to provide data de-duplication at the source. Definitely a nice feature compared to some of the other products that check the file only when it gets to the target. Right now our engineers are working with EMC on the reporting piece. Once that gets in line I could possibly share some of our de dup statistics

We have a pretty large infrastructure that utilizes Asigra Televaulting. We protect a ton of data with relatively cheap storage. Awesome concept. Only way to go when preparing a service offering in a DC environment.
