Default Controlling power (Check this out)

Data center heat output and power consumption are becoming increasingly important issues as vendors continue to pack more processing power into smaller spaces.

Efforts are being made to help users by using low-power chips, for example, or by creating special cooling techniques. Another approach is to give users the ability to manage the power used by CPUs by dynamically ramping power up and down according to needs. Intel has said it plans to add power-management technology to its Itanium and Xeon processors in the next year and this week AMD is announcing power-management capabilities for Opteron. By the middle of next year, all Opterons shipped will include PowerNow! Technology, which has been in AMD’s mobile processors since 2000. Brent Kerby, AMD product marketing manager, says with PowerNow! enterprise users will be able to conserve power, reducing heat output and lengthening the life of their processors, without taking performance hits. PowerNow! will manage power automatically based on settings in the operating system. Users also will be able to set performance levels and power thresholds through system management applications, Kerby says. Is this type of technology something you’re interested in getting into your data center? Let me know at jmears@nww.com.

Thanks
