Default how to calculate cooling needs of DC

Hello,
Is there a thumb rule to follow to determine how much cooling is required for a data center? is it calculated on the basis of cooling per server?

Two rules of thumb I use:
  • Power in = heat out (3412 BTU/kW)
  • Airflow required is 150 cfm/kW
I'd like to know what other "guesstimates" people use, too.

For a more formal calculation, you may be interested in the following white paper from APC: Calculating Total Cooling Requirements for Data Centers

calculating on the basis of cooling per server is not feasible. the heat dissipated when a server is on full swing and when it is free is different. you will have to monitor the usage and then adjust the cooling. problems will arise even if its overcooled. but i would like to know how it is actually measured in different data centers
