Riverstone RS-8000 cpu running high

I have two Riverstone RS-8000 running bgp as core router.

The problem is....... On a regular basis the cpu runs 20-25%. but 10 or 14 time per day the cpu runs 90%+ and got problems with the traffic

The process that looks to be consuming 90%+ of the cpu is a task called "NI H".

Any help is welcome.

If I understand your question clearly. Your router cpu utilization is 90% all the time? And it shouldn't be?

Hi , the CPU normal proccess is 20-25% but a proccess call "NI H" use the CPU to 90% 14 times per day and affect the traffic. and i dont know what is this proccess an how i can fix this, thanks in advance for any help.

Can you post a snipped output of the command so we can see more of what is going on overall?

Have you tried opening a case with TAC (or what ever the Riverstone/ Nortel technical support centre is?)

Those chaps will be the best bet I would think for an issue like this.

The Riverstone RS platform was never intended to operate as a full-transit BGP peer due to its flow-based architecture. Because of this, there are often a very large number of short lived flows resulting in very high CPU utilisation and control plane instability (e.g. during DOS attacks).

The link that Schumie refers to explains it in much more detail.

Since Riverstone was bought by Lucent, and the subsequent merger with Alcatel, the RS platform is now EOL and Alcatel-Lucent will only support you if you have a current maintenance contract.

I sugguest that you look to replace the RS8k with a Cisco 7200 router or, better yet, look at Vyatta.
