Increasing speed

What is the best way to increase the speed of access in my data center? Is that better done with hardware or software? I have a quad core processor.

Well, I have a HP ProLiant ML150 G6 Quad-Core Xeon E5504 2 GHz Server
Server - tower - 5U - 2-way - 1 x Quad-Core Xeon E5504 / 2 GHz - RAM 2 GB - SAS - hot-swap 3.5" - HDD 1 x 250 GB - DVD - Gigabit Ethernet (yeah, I copied that from the specs online and pasted it). Of course I put in bigger hard drives (2 x 1TB). There's some lag when accessing the data stored on it, though.

What's the lag from? That sounds like a pretty decent setup? What are you using it for?
