Default drawbacks of virtualization

why is virtualization not a sought after option inspite of its many advantages and its impending role in the cloud computing technologies? is there any harm in going for 100% virtualization?

No much drawbacks of virtualization. Most of the big companies are going to virtualization. You might share the resources with other servers, but that's not a problem. For an example if you host your server in virtualization pool, you don't need to worry about the down time too. If one of the ESX hosts/or Base hosts go down, server will switch over to another host and run without any down time.

Please check the following article. It has basic information about it.

However, there are some drawbacks of this virtualization software. Pitifully, it does not support 64 bit Windows OS and though it claims to be platform independent.

I really don't think that using 100% virtualization can harm. If you take a closer look at virtualization, you will find that it reduces the hardware maintenance costs by increasing energy efficiency. Virtualization also requires less hardware. Server Virtualization helps you to increase the space utilization efficiency in your data center. Also, you can deploy multiple operating systems on a single hardware.

Thanks for sharing your view Mac. The main drawbacks are; limitations on bandwidth, no control over the operating system software.

One of the biggest single problems with going with %100 virtual machines in an organization is performance. Servers are consolidated and sharing the same hardware. Mission critical systems, especially databases and applications that rely heavily on databases don't perform as well with a hypervisor level between the OS and the hardware in the stack. Also like Victoria mentioned, there's limitations on bandwidth. If it was that easy everyone would simply be %100 vituralized by now, but the reality is on average companies are ~%40-60 virtualized... yes some more some less.
