The same file systems that are used to format physical hard drives may also be used to format virtual hard discs. As a result, the data on a virtual hard drive can be encrypted using a file system that supports encryption, such as NTFS. Similarly, BitLocker encryption may be applied to virtual hard drives in Windows VMs.
