We run our java applications on REDHAT boxes and all of them are running from VMware ESX server, we don't have memory issue. Also, you can easily upgrade it, if you want more RAM.

If you are running critical applications I would you recommend you to go with hardware firewall because you can block the packets in layer level and much easier.

I looked at some of the server specs and very expensive compare to Desktop, but specs are kind of similar. Why do we need to buy server instead of Desktop? Why can't we just use desktop as the server?
