remote back up

how does remote back up take place exactly? is the same principle used to maintain a backup of the cloud data?

Meaning of Remote back is having backup taken at some remote location (off-site). It provides you mitigation against Disaster at local datacenter due to fire or any other reason. There are many ways to have remote backup.

1 Having backup system at remote location and taking backup over WAN connection ( need bigger WAN/internet connections to handle traffic).

2 Having de-duplication devices on-site and off-site and taking backup using de-duplication devices. these are not very bandwidth intensive.

3 can have backup at remote site on tapes and have schedule of tape movement from on-site to off-site in regular basis.

Same concept applies to cloud storage.

Doing something "remotely" means that you are doing something from another location. Having a "remote" back-up system only means that you can back-up without having to be right there. Sometimes you can actuall just create settings that will do the back-up by itself.

Today’s top data protection services provide the ability for on-premise backup, cloud-based protection or a hybrid approach. This inherent flexibility allows you to select the solution that matches the recovery point and recovery time requirements of your business.

The ideal solution for most businesses is a hybrid strategy that combines fast and efficient local protection with a cloud component to provide full site recovery as well as complete access to your data any time anywhere via the internet with appropriate authentication.

Totally agree! IMO Cloud computing model can be the ideal solution of performance, reliability and security. By using multiple platforms you allow yourself the freedom to distribute workloads to the optimal environment.

I think there needs to be a clear definition of exactly what remote cloud backup includes.

There's bit of a grey area as to load balancing of multiple sync'ed data sets at different locations and snapshot type backups taken at a point in time and kept in different locations.
