Foundry

Another viable option is Foundry. They have very good stable gear. We use them for Access layer to Core layer.

The bonus is that it cost significantly less. The command line syntax is VERY similar. Only a few things done differently, but very intuitive. A bonus to the CLI syntax is that you can do things like save your config or show config while in config mode (...as an example). It saves you a couple commands when you have to do some show's and then make changes.

define *popular* :)

The first two brands that come to mind, are Cisco and Juniper. Foundry has become increasingly popular the last 5 years or so. High bandwidth networks also use Force10.

But, it mainly depends on what you want to do with it. Cisco has had a long history in corporate environments, so that makes it 'well known', I guess.

Cisco is very popular and it's very expensive simply because they're the best.

Cisco specializes in them, so naturally has a lot more time and effort in it to make it the best in the market.

Since cisco has been around the longest and that is the only area in which they have product then I think they can concentrate on making the very best product with full stability as possible. I am sure there are other brands out there but whether or not they can compare is the question.

As Cisco have been around for quite some time, you'll find that you can pickup equipment slightly easier than from some of the other vendors.

Due to their range of equipment - from small to large they have good market coverage to be positioned for whatever size network you're after running.

Hi,

Cisco routers are most popular as far as i know.
But i did not understand why would you want to know which one is popular?
I think one should be asking which one is most cost-efficient or which one performs the best.

Anyways, Keep sharing.

Ben Thomas
