Staff Required to run Data Center

Hi guys,

How many staff would you say would be required to run a medium size data center. I would also be interested to know exactly what type of staff this would be.

You would need several kind of staff:
- finance
- security (at least 4 for 24/7)
- engineers (at least 2 for 8/5)
- cleaners

You really can only factor this from defining "mid size".

How many systems are going in? What is the MTBF? What is the provisioning rate? How many tickets will be opened?

I am still very new to the whole data center business and I am sorry that I have many questions but what exactly does MTBF stand for. Thanks!

Hi jamesb,

I think it depends on your business, are you doing housing or hosting? For example, where I work we have about 50 people working on our DC divided in areas: communications, systems, database, help desk, production (they work with/monitor our application). We hire a company for the cleaners. And I'm not including management (higher ups, finance, secretaries, servants, HR) and the developers, because we are located on the DR. We have a total of 180 people, give or take a few.

It also depends on if you want 24/7/365 physical coverage.
