Designing a server rack
Hi
I have to design a rack and would like some help on products to use. Basically I have a rack with 24-30 servers. There are also 2 switches (for NIC teaming with the servers). The switches have 2 1GB NICs and another management NIC. What sort of products could I use for the rack, switches and servers? Thanks |
Hi and welcome to the forums. I'm afraid your question is a bit vague. There are hundreds of products for mounting, powering, cooling, connecting, organizing, securing, monitoring and managing servers, switches and their associated cabling in racks. Browse through a web site like APC.com and see what I mean.
Can you be more specific about what you want to know? Ken |
Really that all depends on your budget. Depending on how much money you have to burn through and what your expected ROI is, then you have several, as Ken said. If you are just starting our you may want to consider cheaper or even maybe used hardware with a build by need model on the high end servers. Your ROI will determine your price, switches, hardware, powering and monitoring (if not provided by datacenter), and even remote hands costs. I think if you are going to be venturing into this you may wish to do some thorough research first, or even contact a some informative people for help. Anyone you buy colocation from will give you suggestions more times then not. It also helps you build a relationship with your provider.

You are going to need zip ties or Velcro to help manage the cables (i.e. power chords and network cables). Make sure you rack your servers tight, that there is no space between them. This will help with the airflow and help keep system cool.

Dell makes nice racks.
There's a lot of good brands for networking equipment, but no one was ever fired for buying Cisco. |
