IPv6, shouldn't it be fully deployed by now?

I was looking on IANA's site recently and it came to my attention that IPv6 deployement started in 1999 but nearly everyone is still using IPv4, which seeing as IPv4 address's are slowly running I think someone should actually do something about getting IPv6 into wider use.

We aren't close to running out of IPv4 IP's, so I don't really see the hurry. If needed there are millions of legacy IPs allocations which could be partially reclaimed, etc., but things haven't even gotten close to far enough to need to do that.

The two aren't compatible so in order to use IPv6 your machines and routers have to be configured for it. Most providers don't want to spend the time and energy to maintain dual stack routers. Since everything is on IPv4 now, it's the one that wins.

Hmm true, how long do you think it will be till people do have to use IPv6?

I've just started experimenting with IPv6, got a /32 from RIPE, advertising it to some IPv6 upstreams and also providing IPv6 transit to one customer already.
I'm now in the process of defining subnets and so on. How did you guys do that? What subnet do you give to a customer; /48, /56?
I would be really intersting in reading some stories from you about the implementation, problems, challenges and solutions.

I think the majority of people are assigning /48's for EU usage now. Their has been much discussion over this, but I think most people have hammered this out and /48's seem reasonable.

I'm pretty sure their is some advisory docs produced by the RIPE NCC too.
