VOIP terminology

Hey guys, im trying to get into becoming a VOIP provider, im currently trying to learn all i can before doing anything. Anyway.
1.What is termination, i keep seeing it used over and over, what does it mean and do.
2.If i was to provide VOIP sollution's, i understand the proccess of sending the digital signal from an internet conection to the server, but what converts this back to Analog, and allows it to go through the phone lines.
3. Do i have to set up a "termination point", what ever that is, hopefully answered in q1.
4.Basically what is all the equipment i would need, and Software.
5. What does Astrik, do.

Thanks guys in advanced for taking your time to answer this.

Hi,

very soon (within a week) I will post a tutorial for choosing a VoIP provider. It will help a lot to most of the people who try to enter the VoIP business. I have promised it to David since a lot of time, but lazyness and lack of time made me postpone it :(

Hi Teodor !

I think this week has passed, do you have information about 'What is needed to set up Termination sale in an area' ?

Any info online...?

Regards
Eric

1. Termination is where the calls will finally end to a PSTN/T1/E1 side. Most Voip Setups have Origination Gateways, some type of gatekeeper in the middle and a termination endpoint. Both origination and termination can have Voice T1's or E1's connected to them providing the access needed to the public telephone system.

Here is a great site for you to aquaint yourself with terminology, equipment, and vendors:

http://voip-info.org/tiki-index.php

2. This varies depending on your implementation. You can have an ATA device (Sipura, Grandstream, Audiocodes all make them) which converts the signals by connecting the telephone directly to these devices which register to a H323 or SIP endpoint via the internet.

3. There are a vast multitude of termination providers which will charge you based on your termination requirements. If you prefer to have A to Z termination (Meaning all area/country codes in the world) you can do this as well. I've enclosed a link below with great resources:

http://www.voipproviderslist.com/

4. Again depends on what you want to do..You can:
A) Provide Wholesale services, which basically means you have a Gatekeeper with multiple termination providers registered to it, then you have clients whom wish to terminate traffic <Calling Cards, etc> via your rates.

Example: one termintion provider charges you 1 cent for any call in the U.S. -- You tell your clients you will charge them 1.5 cents, hence .5 cent per minute profit.

B) Provide IP/PBX services, research Asterisk for open source pbx system which you can offer for broadband residential customers or business clients. Again this depends on how much money you wish to spend on your business.

C) Calling Cards, pretty simple.

Hope these answers helped.
