Standard Tools
 

What are your standard tools that your data center keeps handy? Just want to make sure that I have everything I might need. If I never use them all that is ok.

We have a Genie lift used to haul around heavy servers like in the 100 lb + range. Then use it to insert the servers into the racks. That pays for itself in just a short while.

I do my own in house terminations for fiber, coax, and copper. So I have all the necessary tools and testers for those.

A fluke DSP4000 analyzer to certify terminations.

Your standard tools such as screw guns, electricians tools, and etc.

Hand held thermal meter uses a concentrated laser to check room temperature.

Environmental monitoring servers and software used to monitor and alert the HVAC.

A plethora of label makers.

I run the asset control as well so Symbol MC9090.

My data center is my pride and joy. So I like to brag about the advances we've made in it though it is old and legacy.

The things I use most commonly in a datacenter are:

Power screw driver (with assortment of bits that actually fit the screw heads).

Manual screw drivers (with assortments of bits that also actually fit the screw heads).

An assortment of drill bits and 10/32 tap for when someone uses a screw driver that does not fit the head of the screw properly and strips the screw head

Flash light
Pliers
Snips of all sorts
Electrician scissors
Laser thermometer as well as a digital psychrometer (for measuring ambient temperature and humidity)
Tape measure
Electrical tape
Wire marker booklets
Cat 5/Rj 11 crimper and ends
Basic rj45 continuity tester
Tone generator
Butt set
Volt meter
Amp clamp
Cable labeler
regular labeler

The tools you will need are totally dependant on what your role is and what your environment is.

Great lists of items and I like how you put your words about your data center in as well. This is very good information and I really appreciate all the help. I would like to hear from others as well.

One of the most important tools to have is definitely a labeller, some cable ties and sound round nosed pliers - I carry these in my laptop bag like a religion as you can pretty much do anything anywhere. This is along with a screwdriver with adjustable heads, but for planned works I prefer to have my box of screwdrivers with me to cover all occasions.

Always carry some spare cables, and with your laptop make sure you have a USB to serial converter if it's relatively new, chances is are it won't have a serial port!

A good floor tile lifter is very good as well, if you're working in different facilities you probably want both types - those that are suction based for smooth floors, and those that are spiked for the older carpet tiled data centres (they still exist unfortunately!)

Yeah I would imagine a labeler would be very useful if you want to keep track of anything. Afterall if things are not labeled how do you know what they are right. I guess in the laptop bag because you always carry that right? Sounds like a very good idea to carry those things.

For rack labelling, I'd recommend purchasing embossed metal tags. Nice and easy to stick on and nearly never come off.

Get some letters for your rows, and voila you are sorted!
