I see offers for p4 2.4ghz servers with 120gig hdds, 1024 megs ram connected for 100mbits for a grand or more..

can these servers really consistently push 100mbit of traffic (~1000gigs/day) assuming apache web serving of 5 meg files on a well tuned linux box with no php/perl scripts hogging cpu?

also - say people are requesting 120mbit and ive got 100 mbit capped - will everyone just slow down a bit to bring speeds down to 100 mbit or will the server start choking?

thanks =)

I think it's going to have more to do with the capabilities of the hdds, and the speed of the I/O connecting it to the NIC. The CPU should be plenty fast as long as you don't have to process the information before sending it.
