As business owners get accustomed to faster online communications through high-speed Internet access, concerns often turn to security issues.

High-speed Internet options include cable and DSL, which stands for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL creates a direct link to the Internet by sending a signal over existing copper telephone lines already connected to every home and business. It uses the telephone system's data band so voice calls are unaffected. DSL's wide "pipeline" accommodates a wonderful mix of voice, video and data found in most multimedia applications.

DSL is very fast and very easy to use. However, because it's always "on", you'll want to implement some simple precautions to safeguard your computer system against online threats such as:

Viruses, worms and Trojans. The latest Antivirus software will protect your computer and scan incoming email for nasty attachments. Given the proliferation of sophisticated viruses, look for Antivirus software that's automatically updated every few hours. Good Antivirus software can be personalized to your preferences, allowing you to customize folders and receive frequent scan reports.
Unauthorized access. To prevent outsiders from hacking into your computer, set up a Firewall. It's an automatic block between you and unwanted intruders. Firewalls are set up to detect applications trying to connect to the Internet before they succeed. The service won't restrict your ability to surf the 'net once you set it up with your own preferences.

Unauthorized employee usage. While it's important to give your team online access, you may want to control browsing times, specify inappropriate sites or restrict employee use of certain applications. Content Filtering gives administrators the ability to put limits on Internet access.
Pop-up ads. Your web browser gets attacked by parasitic programs while you surf the Internet, generating those annoying "pop-up" ads and banners. Blocker programs will remove them.
Cookies. Whenever you visit a website, it tries to attach a "cookie" to your browser so it can identify you whenever you return. A "cookie manager" lets you view, edit and delete cookies.

Unwanted programs. Spy-ware is software that gets unknowingly installed on your computer with a mission to collect and transmit your private information, such as your browsing habits, email addresses, passwords and credit card and banking information. Anti-Spyware software scans and removes these sneaky programs and checks for updates.

Minimizing your online risk is simply good for business. These safeguards are easily obtained from your Internet solutions provider and are well worth the investment. Each is designed to enhance your online communications without adding unnecessary interference. Such protective measures will help your company to reap the benefits of DSL high-speed Internet access while eliminating most worries
