Plan plan plan.. and then plan some more.
Make sure your business models are fully calculated to ensure sustainability - remember, this is not a light hearted investment and any company worth its salt should have been through quite a large review process from all aspects to ensure that this is the best path for the company to take.
If you only require small areas of space, it will be more than likely more cost effective to approach either a managed services provider or data centre that can offer collocation.

Yeah I think that is why it is taking longer than anticipated. Planning and making sure that I am not missing anything and that all the tools are there, and so one. I know believe me that it is not a light hearted investment, I have put a lot of money into this and if I do not get it working then I will be in trouble (ok not really, but will be out a bit).
Goal without plan won't work ;)

I agree with nike, take each step carefully and take into consideration all the possible risks involved. Its a good practice to take suggestions from experienced people when you face difficulty in taking decisions.

The best advice I could give, simply having watched so many people try and fail here, is to try to avoid getting in over your head as well as you can. If possible, build up a presence in colocation before expanding to your own facility. When you do build out your own facility, build it out in phases (not all at once if you can avoid it). And yes, plan every move very carefully as I think everyone has very wisely suggested. :)

1. Analyze
2. Plan
3. Implement
4. Maintain
You may need to ask people on forums like you just did when you are in doubt and may even have to take help of some expert to get you through.

I think planning and cost effectiveness are the 2 crucial factors to be kept in mind while creating a data center... and this was good learning from this post. Thanks

I would say ...
keep it simple, flexible, scalable, and modular and think of density rather than floor space.
I was wondering ... just anybody a checklist for data center. can u share it with us.

I think the most important input that i can provide you to set up a data centre is to plan properly in a systematic way about the below mentioned details:
Time scheduling
Planning
investing
effectiveness
locations
This is just like the same as with in starting up a business, so proper planning is very much needed here. If you are sure that you'd like to set-up a data center, then make sure that you are not going to skip any of these factors/tips/guidelines.
- Proper planning and analization (includes the architectural structure and all)
- good location (includes the weather factor and if it is accessbile)
- electricity, wiring and backup tools
- cost effectiveness
- investment
- time/time scheduling
- ventilation
- maintenance team and tools
