HP INVESTS $300 MILLION IN DATA CENTER DEVELOPMENT

Hewlett Packard (HP) has announced that it has invested $300 million in the research and development of its latest data center server, HP ProLiant Gen8.

HP Blade System Manager Africa Mr. Zeid Majid briefed journalists in a public presentation of the product to its clients by saying that it has over 150 innovations based on feedback and recommendations from clients and customers.

He observed that companies spend an average of $24 million over three years on manual operations to support servers and growing server energy, and facilities expenses cost companies up to $29 million.

According to him, “HP new product is out to triple administrator productivity by eliminating most manual operations such as server updates, which typically take five hours of administrator time per rack of servers”.

“Gen 8 is part of HP’s strategy to fit into the changing trend in data storage for organisation.”  Majid added.

The HP Manager, Public Sector Division, Mr. Chuks Akpaka said the company has been aggressive in West Africa with the launch of 12 offices in six countries in recent times.

According to him, “After the global launch of the product recently, it was now cascading the launch down to the customers in their niche markets which was why Abuja was a next after Lagos.”

He also informed that HP market share in data centre servers in Nigeria has decreased to 50 percent from about 70 per cent due to stiff competitions from other server manufacturers. He also mentioned that in spite of the severe competition the company was determined to keep the top spot.

“Tested in more than 100 real-world data centers, HP ProLiant Gen8 servers are built with more than 150 client-inspired design innovations. These innovations dramatically accelerate application performance and also allow administrators to maximize server availability by eliminating common problems that cause failures, downtime and data loss.”
