Birth of the Data Center

Data Centers have been essential to the background running of the computer industry for many decades. In the earlier days they were very different to how they are now and were presented in a crude form. Items such as cable trays and racks on the wall  demonstrated the birth of Data Centers and represented the need for system-wide tools. The early computer rooms were a hazardous realm of endless wires and cooling systems to keep the machines cool and it became apparent that something had to be done do create a safer working environment.

It was the 1980s which witnessed the boom of the microcomputer industry. As the IT operations developed in complexity, the companies became aware of the need to control such resources. The inexpensive and convenient  nature of the equipment made it possible to create a hierarchical design which would put specific servers inside a room within the company. It was around this era in time that the term ‘data center’ was directly applied to the specially designed computer rooms.

The turn of 2007 brought in the new age of the ‘dot.com bubble.’ Millions of companies across the world depended on a fast internet connection with a non-stop operational system in order to establish a notable presence on the world wide web. Within no time, the sprouting of Internet based data centers began across the globe as companies raced to build their own vast facility. They were the providers of a variety of solutions for systems and operations, and were designed to handle the requirements of large scale operations. It was these practices that merged into the private data centers we see today and were adopted by many. Today, the data center is an operation which is a well-known discipline and organisations such as TIA specify in depth requirements for a data center design.
